Acacia is a large genus of trees and shrubs. The
specific species found in Polynesian and Pacific islands are highly desirable
for all types of wood products including bowls, unique furniture pieces, and
jewelry.
The wood is highly variable in appearance, both in color and figure, depending
on the specific source of the wood. It is remarkably multi-colored, with a
variety of hues appearing next to each other in the same piece of wood, ranging
from yellow or greenish-yellow, through orange, brown, and red, to almost
black. The dominant color is greatly dependent on its source. The wood is also
highly figured and generally has a curly grain. When highly polished, it
retains a translucent three dimensional look and appears to have great depth.
